Vascular Stroke Screening Helps Indicate Early Stroke Detection Risks

11Cardiovascular disease (heart and circulatory disease) causes more than one in four of all deaths in the UK – that’s around 160,000 deaths a year. This figure includes deaths from stroke, heart attacks, heart failure, cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrillation.

How can vascular stroke screening help?

Because strokes and heart attacks are so-called ‘silent killers’ in that they rarely have any symptoms and strike without warning, it makes good sense to have your vascular health (that’s the health of your arteries) checked. Vascular Stroke Screening is a comprehensive package of scans and ultrasound tests, which can you, give a representative snapshot of the state of your arteries.

Finding out if you have a problem with your arteries gives you the chance to lower your risk factors for a stroke or heart attack before it happens by making lifestyle changes such as taking more exercise, giving up smoking and losing weight, as well as taking medication to help lower you blood pressure and cholesterol and controlling your blood sugar.

What ‘s included in vascular stroke screening?

Our package of scans costs £179 and is available to men over 45, the purpose is to examine three key areas of the body to assess the state of your vascular system (arteries).

These examinations include:

  • An abdominal aorta scan: The aorta is the main blood vessel leading from the heart down to your abdomen and the rest of the body. It’s normally about the width of a hosepipe (approximately 2cm), but if the wall weakens it can ‘bulge’ to (this is called aortic dilatation) double the size at 5.5cm and can be in danger of bursting. This is called an abdominal aortic aneurysm and is rare but very serious, because if it bursts it can cause fatal bleeding. A rupture accounts for one in 50 deaths in men aged over 65 and causes 6,000 deaths a year in England. Ultrasound Direct’s scan of your aorta will examine the aorta to check for signs of an abdominal aortic aneurysm and also examine the iliac arteries, a network of arteries that supply a number of areas of the body including the lower limbs and pelvis. The scan will be checking for signs of narrowing caused by calcification (fatty deposits) or thrombus build-up (clotted blood) and can also monitor aortic dilatation (swelling of the aorta).

If an abdominal aortic aneurysm is detected, both kidney and renal arteries will be checked too.

  • A carotid scan: The carotid arteries are in the front of your neck and carry oxygenated blood to the brain. When the carotid arteries narrow due to a build-up of plaque it raises the risk of you having a stroke. Carotid artery disease accounts for 20 in 100 of all strokes. Our Doppler ultrasound examination will check the size; condition and blood flow of your carotid arteries, from their origin to where they divide in two, to supply different areas of the brain/ head. We will also check internal and external carotid arteries and vertebral arteries. The scan will check for plaque build-up and narrowing.
  • A scan for peripheral arterial disease: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is where your arteries begin to narrow – it affects one in five men aged 50 to 75 and one in eight women in the same age group. It mainly affects the arteries supplying blood to the legs. The main symptom of PAD is pain in one leg or both on walking (this is called intermittent claudication), but only one in four people experience any symptoms – hence why scanning is a good idea as it can help build up a picture of your arteries. Ultrasound Direct uses a Doppler scan to measure blood flow in the brachial arteries in both arms and also takes a blood pressure measurement in the arm and the ankle while a person is at rest called the ankle brachial index. The Doppler scan also checks the tibial arteries in both legs. The tests will help your sonographer determine whether you have signs of PAD, and can also help with on-going monitoring of aortic dilatation.

If you do have PAD, taking 30 minutes of exercise a day (walking is regarded as the best form) has been shown to improve PAD symptoms, as it encourages a network of smaller blood vessels to grow and improves blood flow to the legs.

We will provide a sonographer’s report at the time of the scan with a medical follow-up recommendation if needed.

Preparing for your vascular stroke screening

Prior to your appointment you’ll be asked to fast for eight hours – so no breakfast if your appointment is in the morning and no lunch if it’s in the afternoon. Stick to clear fluids (black tea or coffee are allowed). Diabetics are allowed to eat but must avoid fatty/dairy products.

We advise wearing a loose-fitting top, which is easy to get on and off, as you’ll need to expose the upper and lower parts of your abdomen, neck, upper arms and ankles.

The ninja/nutribullet/vitamix and similar blenders don’t juice, they make smoothies. I don’t care what your grandma told you, it’s still a blender. There’s no amount of blending that will make it a juicer.

Is this a juice fast/cleanse?

Answer: No.

The challenge is to drink at least one glass of juice a day. This shouldn’t be followed as a fast/cleanse. You’ll probably die.

Should I eat too or is this just juice?

Answer: Eat!

You need to eat. You can’t just have 32oz of juice every day for 30 days. Eat like a normal human being. Don’t just eat 1 meal and drink 32oz of juice either, that’s not what this is about, and you’re going to screw up your metabolism doing that.

Diving right in, certainly there exists a universal framework which allows for one to consciously create a reality and have that creation manifest as their experience. This framework essentially exists as a collection of patterns, geometries, pathways, and systems which dictate the manner in which nature unfolds and creations manifest. Pertinent to this article, our conscious mind functions within this framework as an architect and builder, the reality which we wish to conjure is constructed and shaped within the mind which is then broadcast to the universe through the vacuum. In response, the universe forms a pathway through which your created reality is able to manifest and be experienced by your consciousness.

Now let’s discuss how this inherent power of ours can be honed through meditative practice. The universe is constantly “listening” to the thoughts and desires which form in our minds as we are innately creators. Therefore, if we are able to still the mind and clearly and concisely form an “image” of the reality we wish to experience then the universe is provided with more exact instructions as to how to assist in manifesting that reality for us. On the other hand, if we divide our mind’s power between many different thoughts and images, we effectively decrease the creative force attached to the reality our consciousness is attempting to build. Furthermore, it is also very important to simply believe that you have this creative power within you already because if you do not, you end up informing the universe that you do not believe the reality you desire can and will manifest for you (which is a pretty good way of preventing it from doing so).

Lastly, we can view our minds as consisting of two elements: the outer mind and the inner mind. The outer mind can be seen as the director which perceives and experiences the world. The inner mind is basically the seat of creative potential within you which unwavering fulfills whatever request is dictated by the outer mind as it lacks any ability to discriminate, doubt, or disbelieve. Thus as soon as the outer mind constructs an “image” of one’s desired reality the inner mind throws its creative power behind it and sends it off to the vacuum. When you create a desired realty within your mind you attach a portion of your essence to it, and this is what helps attract the manifestation of that reality into your experience. Accordingly, the longer and more clearly your desired reality is held in your mind, the greater the amount of your essence that you attach to it, and the faster that reality manifests for you. This is how we as divine human beings can master our lives and I hope that this article has been of some use to you in shedding some light on the power that is all of ours by birthright. Take care.

Are You Grasping or Gravitating?

How do you know if you are you grasping or gravitating in your life? When you are grasping you are trying to make something happen or striving forward; perhaps operating on auto-pilot and working on that big “should list”? When you are gravitating you are coming from an intuitive place and you are naturally drawn to people and circumstances that support you in your highest good. It feels easy and it unfolds easily. Sometimes we question that feeling because it goes against what we were taught – that you have to make things happen, keep on striving and moving up and that ANY momentum is a good thing. I don’t know about you, but I want to work smarter doing what I love (not harder) because I want plenty of time to play, love and have fun!2341_620x290

When we are grasping and living on auto-pilot this can create a lot of stress that impacts our physical and emotional health. This will generally manifest in health issues like weight gain, depression, addictive behaviors such as anesthetizing with food and/or alcohol, exacerbating autoimmune diseases, heart disease, and even cancer. It is well established that stress feeds cancer, so I’m not saying that to scare you. The sad truth is that living a stressed out, unhappy and unfulfilled life has consequences, but you do have a choice.

How do you know if you are grasping or gravitating? When you are presented with a situation to consider or a desire to create something, do the following:

1. Check in with your physical response. Do you feel heavy/sad or light/happy? This is a great indicator and I’ve talked about this concept before; how some things can literally weigh you down and you need to detox/cleanse them from you life. Well you can also use this “feel test” when considering what to do next or when presented with a new opportunity. Do you feel tense, nauseous, or heavy at the thought? Or do you feel light, happy and joyful at the thought?

2. Sit quietly and meditate and/or ask for guidance. This may take some patience if new to this sort of thing. I remember when I was a newcomer to praying and meditation so I encourage you to be patient with yourself. Sometimes just a quiet walk in nature will provide the answer. Just be open to receiving the messages.

3. Surrender to the outcome. The result may not be what you EXPECTED, maybe it’s better!

In the past when I have tried to make things happen because I feel like I should be doing something to move my life and business forward, they always seem to fall short. I usually end up dreading what I committed to and then beat myself up for not getting it “right”. But when I check in with my internal guidance system first, those ideas and concepts get much better results because they are more in alignment with who I am.

I have learned many things in my life that I apply to my coaching practice. In fact, I am frequently asked how I bucked my family legacy of obesity (morbid), type II diabetes, depression, negativity, and unfulfilled desires that led to my mother’s death at the age of 71. The short answer to this question is personal choice and learning to tap into my intuition and mindset. When you realize that you do have a choice over family inheritance, environment, and what you choose to believe about yourself and how to live your life, things can change in an instant. You. Decide. Now.

You decide to take a step toward that which you want with all your heart. You decide to stand up for yourself. You decide that today is the day you take back your health and reject an unhealthy inheritance. You decide to love yourself first so that you can really enjoy life with those that you love. You decide to own your worth and declare your value. You decide to stop grasping and living on auto-pilot. The list goes on, but I think you get the idea.

What thought can you decide to change right now? Now take action, no matter how small. Make a call, reach out, ask for help, make it known, and then let it go. Now applaud yourself and smile!

Type 2 Diabetes – Gastric Bands or Non-Surgical Care for Lower Blood Sugar Levels and Weight Loss

The question of whether to have lap band surgery or to manage Type 2 diabetes without the procedure, could be just a matter of personal preference. That was the conclusion researchers made at the end of a study reported on in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism in April 2015.

Researchers at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, compared the two approaches in forty Type 2 diabetic participants. The participants…

  • ranged between 21 and 65 years of age,1050_symptoms_emotional_mental_head
  • were obese, and had
  • HbA1c levels of 6.5 percent or higher.

The Type 2 diabetic participants were randomly assigned to the surgery group or the group treated with medications and an intense weight loss program. At the end of one year more surgical patients reached acceptable blood sugar levels, but the difference was not statistically significant…

  • both groups had about the same improvement in their HbA1c control.
  • systolic blood pressure (top number) was better with non-surgical care, but diastolic blood pressure (lower number), blood fats, fitness, and the risk of heart disease were the same in both groups.
  • both groups reported improvement in their perception of the impact of weight on their quality of life and problem areas in diabetes.

From these results, it was concluded diabetes control, heart disease risk, and patient satisfaction were the same in both groups, and suggest personal preference might be an appropriate deciding factor in choosing treatment. They also suggest longer studies might uncover differences that could emerge after the first year.

Lap Band Surgery entails inserting stomach bands. Surgeons work through small cuts in the abdomen, minimizing scars and healing time. A camera is inserted so the surgeon can see the stomach… a ring is then placed around the stomach. Four to 6 weeks later the band is inflated with a solution of salt and water. When inflated the band keeps the top of the stomach partly closed, so appetite, eating, and weight decreases. As in any surgery, bleeding, infection, and untoward reaction to anesthetic are all possible – but rare. Blood clots can form in the legs and travel to the lungs. Gallstones and malnutrition are also risks.

Non-surgical medical care for high blood sugar levels usually commences with the oral drug metformin, and other oral drugs can be added, or maybe even replace it altogether. A carefully supervised weight loss program means coaching from medical, dietetic and nursing staff and sticking to a sensible eating and exercise plan. This method has fewer risks but for some Type 2 diabetics, can be more difficult.

Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.

Tips to Help Prevent Heart Disease

However, there are an immense number of things that we can do to greatly improve our odds of achieving many of our goals, including good-health goals. As I get older, I witness more and more cases of heart attacks, cancer, and even broken bones that could, in part, be a result of osteoporosis. Heart disease is way at the top of the list of things that happen to older people, but it actually starts at a younger age.

In order to prevent heart disease, it is important to follow a heart-healthy lifestyle. The Mayo Clinic lists some very good tips that will benefit everyone.

  1. Don’t smoke or use tobacco.
  2. Exercise for 30 minutes most days.
  3. Eat a heart-healthy diet.
  4. Maintain healthy weight.
  5. Get enough quality sleep.
  6. Get regular health screenings.

If you can, get 30 to 60 minutes of exercise most days. More benefits are reaped by increasing the duration, frequency, and intensity of your exercise. However, even less exercise has its benefits and do what you can, even if it means dividing the 30 minutes into three 10-minute intervals.

What makes a “heart-healthy” diet? Here is where I think it is very easy to fail, even when you think you are eating healthy. Do you even think about whether you are eating saturated fats or trans fats? We should avoid or limit our saturated fats. Saturated fats are found in red meat, dairy products, and in coconut oil.

We should also avoid or limit our consumption of trans fats. Trans fats are found in deep-fried fast foods, bakery products, packaged snack foods, margarine, and crackers. The label “partially hydrogenated” means trans fat!

You should have some healthy fats. Some places healthy fats are found include avocado, nuts, olives, and olive oil.

In your healthy diet, you should be getting 5 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

Regarding alcohol, women should limit consumption to one drink a day, and men two drinks a day. In moderation, alcohol actually offers a protective effect. More is a health hazard.

Another tip for maintaining good heart health is to chill out! Relax and relieve your stress. You may do meditation, yoga, meet with friends, take a walk.

It is a good idea to know your family medical history if possible.

How to Meditate and Vipassana Meditation

meditateVipassana meditation is an interesting type of meditation, strict and rigid. Generally practiced in silence and using your breath to meditate. It is something you may want to discover a little later in your experimenting. How to meditate is far more important first before tackling Vipassana.

So today we are going to learn how to meditate with a simple and easy kind of meditation that anyone should be able to do.

Meditation, also know as mindfulness, will help give your life meaning and perspective. A sense of awareness of being and living in the now.

When we slow down our mind and relax our body, we can start to sense a change of attitude, a change of outlook and a change of life.

Meditation has no rules, it is part of no religion and it transcends boundaries. Where can you meditate? At home, in the park, at work and even waiting in line at the football or supermarket.

Let’s start with what I call a Two Minute Breath meditation. Get yourself comfortable and relaxed, turn off your phone and get your partner to mind the children if need be.

With eyes closed begin to focus on your breath. Become aware of your breath as you breathe in and out. Feel your breath as you inhale and sense it filling your lungs. The breath is invisible and yet we can feel it, almost touch it, but we cannot see it but we know it is there. It is a sacred element giving us life.

Once you learn this technique your life will never be the same. When you focus on your body and just your breath it is very hard for other thoughts to come into your mind. Your focus becomes intense and laser like giving your mind greater clarity.

This practice is easy. Vipassana is tough. This one takes no longer than two minutes a day. If you can meditate both morning and night then wonderful and good for you. That’s four minutes out of your 24 hour day. I am sure you can spare that.

It will be well worth it as you start to change in very subtle ways. You become calmer, relaxed, you don’t worry so much, you become focused and inspired to do the things that you love doing. You will also stop worrying about what others think of you.

Vipassana meditation is a free course over 10 days and I highly recommend them once you have been practising at least 2 years. These courses are in silence for 10 days. There is no physical contact, no eye contact and no reading or taking notes. If you are looking for a higher level of meditation then vipassana may be the answer for you.

Your immune system is one of the most important systems in your body. The white cells in your body (also known as leukocytes) are a major part of your immune system. Most are born in the marrow of your body’s long bones. Some of them migrate to the thymus gland early on where they become T-cells. (The thymus is located just above the heart in the chest.) Others remain in the bone marrow, and some of them become what are called B-cells. Together, the T and B cells are referred to as lymphocytes.

While the T-cells are in the thymus they are trained to recognize over a million different antigens, with each T-cell recognizing only one specific antigen. An antigen is a molecular recognition code that is on the surface of all cells; is can be friendly or foreign. If unfriendly, such as those on viruses, it will be attacked. In most cases, however, immune system cells have to be given permission before they can attack. This is because several friendly pathogens live and perform important functions in the body. A good example is the friendly bacteria in your colon that help digest food.

Your thymus works hard to educate billions of T-cells throughout your younger years. As you grow older, however, it begins to shrink in size, and gives you less protection. That’s why older people (over about 65) are more susceptible to infections and cancer.

As T-cells mature in the thymus, they take on one of four functions. They can become:

1. Helper T-cells (T-4 cells): These cells are particularly important shortly after the infection occurs. They sound the alarm, and alert the immune system, and they oversee the immune system’s response. They are usually activated after particles called macrophages detect antigens; these macrophages give off cytokines, or messengers, that tell other lymphocytes to begin the attack.

2. Suppressor T-cells (T-8 cells): Once the immune system cells are sent out to fight the antigens, they must be regulated and controlled, particularly after the invaders have been defeated. If not they can attack healthy cells of the body, which may lead to autoimmune disease. Suppressor cells shut down the response when needed.

3. Killer T-cells: These cells kill by injecting poison into the cells containing the antigen. They cannot attack these cells, however, without permission from helper T-cells.

4. Natural Killer cells (NK’s): They are primitive T-cells that are free to attack antigens without permission from helper T’s. Basically, they are the first line of defense. Targets for them are usually identified by macrophages.

While the war between immune system cells and antigens is going on, it’s important for the immune cells to be able to communicate with one another. This is done using hormone-like messengers called cytokines. One of the most important cytokines is interferon. It is released by both T-cells and macrophages, and it guides NK killers to the appropriate targets. It is also used to stop viruses from multiplying, and is helpful in impeding the development of cancer cells.

B-Cells, Antibodies, and Complement

So far we have barely mentioned the B-cells, but they also play a critical role in the war against the antigens. In particular they manufacture antibodies that attack the antigens directly. The B-cells remain in the bone marrow where they eventually become specific for many different antigens. When they mature they move to the body’s lymph nodes.

When T-4 cells see a B-cell displaying the antigen of an invader, they authorize the B-cells to produce antibodies against it. The B-cells immediately begin to grow and divide into a large number of plasma cells. These plasma cells are the factories that produce antibodies. Within a few days each B-cell divides into hundreds of plasma cells, each of which produces millions of antibodies. These antibodies then head for the antigens using the bloodstream. Large numbers lock onto the antigens and disable it. They are assisted by what is called complement. It acts as a catalyst for the reaction between the antibodies and the antigen, and it speed up the reaction. It helps neutralize viruses and other unfriendly microbes.

Phagocytes

Two other types of cells are also important in the fight against antigens. They are the neutrophils and macrophages. Known as phagocytes, they attack and eat antigens. Both are born in bone marrow, and they mature relatively fast. Neurophils are much smaller than macrophages. They are like foot soldiers – lightly armed, but there are large numbers of them, and they are usually the first to attack the antigens. When called into battle they rush in, but can only kill and eat a few antigens (10 to 20) before they die.

Macrophages start out in the thymus as monophages. When they migrate to lymphatic tissue they grow by a factor of 4 or 5 and become macrophages. They are much larger and better trained than neutrophils and they can engulf and eat up to 100 antigens. One of their major jobs is to cut microbes up into small pieces, each displaying their antigen, signaling that they are the enemy.

Summary of the Fight Between the Immune System and Foreign Antigens

The events that occur when your body has been attacked are quite complex and complicated, but I’ll give a simple version of it.
1. A virus of other pathogen invades you body. It gains entry through your nose, eyes, mouth or perhaps a cut.
2. Nearby macrophages and helper T cells usually detect it first. They head for the site of infection.
3. Macrophages cut up the source so that the antigens can be checked to see if they are friend or enemy.
4. Many T-4’s arrive at the site. They release cytokines that alert all parts of the immune system.
5. The T-4 cells proliferate, producing other helper cells, suppressors, and killer cells. All recognize the particular antigen.
6. Some of the T-4’s go to the lymph nodes where they release messengers to alert the B-cells and authorize them to produce antibodies.
7. The B-cells change into plasma cells and each plasma cell produces millions of antibodies. All of this takes time, however, depending on the health of your system. A typical time is a few days, but it may be much longer if your immune system is weak.
8. In the meantime the virus, or pathogens, are producing thousands of copies of themselves and they are fighting back to avoid detection and death.
9. The NK and killer T-cells begin attacking the viruses. But hundreds of thousands of viruses have been produced and the lymphocytes are overwhelmed at first. Some of the viruses are now migrating to other parts of the body.
10. The immune system increases the temperature of the body in an effort to destroy the invaders. It may increase it to 104 degrees. It also sends in inflammation to wall off the invaders in an effort to stop them from spreading.
11. After several days the antibodies and complement begin to make some progress. Finally the antibodies, complement, NK and killer T’s along with neutrophils and macrophages begin fighting in unison and begin to overcome the invaders.
12. The immune system is now very aggressive, however, and must be turned off when the battle is over. This is where the T-8’s come in.

It’s easy to see from this why you need a strong and healthy immune system. Delays at any stage after the infection allows the antigens to multiply and if not stopped they can overcome your body. The list of things that you should do to keep your immune system in top shape at the beginning of the article is therefore critical, and you should adhere to it.
